About the song: As the ending to the first kaleidscope album, it's really quite a well-balanced song. The sound of brass and guitars gives way to a delicate verse section showing a pure voice from Yuri. The chorus is energetic and the final chorus ups the tempo. The lyrics are at once simple and cryptic, leaving a lot up to the listeners' interpretation. My favourite part is "When you embark on a jouney forward / You get nothing but memories / Soon you forget the happiness you have here."

Notable live appearances: The song was performed live in "Livescope of THE TWILIGHT VALLEY", and it's a really good version with a darker, deeper sound than the album version.

About the song: This song deals with the passing of a loved one. To this day I still find it one of the saddest and most heartfelt of their songs. The song begins quietly and calmly, with a very sad tone. As it approaches the chorus, it builds up tension with drum beats and heavier guitar sounds. The chorus itself is a bittersweet explosion, showing feelings of sadness and hope. Interestingly, this song's introduction is the same as that of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors". The lyrics are simple but very effective. Listento the tine with which Yuri sings "I loved you all my life for a long time", that moment is expressive of the whole song.

*This song's title is difficult to express in English. 永遠に葬れ (towa ni houmure) alone means "buried forever", but in the song it's read as 永遠に眠れ (towa ni nemure) or "sleeping forever." So at once there's both 'buried' and 'sleeping' at the same time, a feeling of "dead but not gone"... It leaves behind a small glimmer of hope.

Notable live appearances: This song was played during the "Crystallize" livescope. That version is particularly haunting, I recommend you watch it!

About the song: This song has quite an interesting arangement. The jazzy pianos are the standout feature, and the unusual melody also helps to make this a very memorable song. This song is the most 'cool' from the first kaleidscope album. As far as I know, "dreaming of love" hasn't been played live or released on any other discs. Considering how enjoyable this is, it's kind of a shame.

GARNET CROW song information 003- Sky

Alternate versions: The song was re-arranged for GARNET CROW's 4th album under the title of "Sky ~new arranged track~", and this version is also the one that appears on the Best album.

About the song: This is GARNET CROW's first 'dark' song and one that sticks with its listeners for a long time. The lyrics are especially strong in this song, with phrases that stand out such as "If I could have the wings to fly free across the seven seas, / Without looking back / I'd take you with me and become a star in the sky." The original arrangement features heavy guitars and a hard, unceasing drumbeat. The sound and lyrics have laid down the foundations for the quality fans call "GARNET-ness", meaningful lyrics and a deep sound in any kind of song they attempt.  

The new arranged track version is intended as a reward for those fans who stuck with GARNET from the beginning. It's a lot lighter, with acoustic guitars and soft vocals, with relaxing sounds all the way through. The backing vocals are almost like the sounds of an owl. Both versions are magnificent.

Notable live appearances: It appeared in the Ninnaji livescope. The version played there was more like the new arranged track than the original.

Alternate versions: There are three versions: the original 1999 version, the re-recording which appeared on first soundscope, and the cool smooth ver., a coupling song of the single. The cool smooth ver. switches some of the lyrics with others.

About the song: This song is another great example of early GARNET CROW, with crisp clean sounds and a great strings introduction. As the title suggests, it's a song about two people, and it's pretty intimate. Their relationship has its ups and downs, as evidenced by lyrics such as "My favourite video's gone / You've lent it to someone" and "When I look at your sleeping face, I remember that winter's day..." The rocket of the chorus also metaphorically reflects upon the state of their relationship: "Look! It's taking off and giving out smoke! / Our rocket's flying through space! / The time until it makes orbit is critical / It's wavering through the atmosphere for us..." Yuri's vocals are showcased well, showing her deep tones in the verses while in the chorus, her sound is much higher.

The cool smooth ver., arranged by Miguel Sa Pessoa, is a more laidback version of the song. In this version the sound of synths is far more apparent, and the vocals echo. It's very different in style to the original, and the vocals have been re-recorded too, with a more cute sound than before.

Tie-up: This song was used in advertising a show called "I'm MUSIC FREAK" on the Japanese TV channel MFTV.

Additional musicians: The first soundscope version features Tokunaga Hiroshi on bass and Kamei Toshikazu on drums. The cool smooth ver. has Miguel Sa Pessoa on keyboard.

 

Notable live appearances: This song appears in most GARNET CROW livescopes these days. The 2010 Best Tour version showed an interesting cartoon of two space travellers in a rocket on the screens during its performance.

GARNET CROW song information 001 - 君の家に着くまでずっと走ってゆく

 This post marks the beginning of a project for me and this site, namely, to write a GARNET CROW song encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy it and find it interesting! We'll start at the beginning with "Kimi no Uchi ni Tsuku made Zutto Hashitte yuku".

About the song: This song is particularly cheery and playful, almost childishly so. Reminiscent of first loves and youth, being a particularly fitting beginning to GARNET CROW's expansive career. The lyrics are simple, pure and happy: "If we get hungry, we'll call for a pizza, wow~" The indies version is filled with sounds of electric organs and is more up-tempo, while the single version is slower, and more relaxing. Which do you prefer?

Additional musicians: In the single version, keyboard was provided by Miguel Sa Pessoa, backing vocals by Michael Africk, acoustic guitar by Aaron Hsu-Flanders and saxophone by 横路竜昇 (I'm not sure of the reading for this name.)

Notable live appearances: In the Ninnaji live, this song was played. During the introduction, Yuri told off Okamoto for playing too fast, a comical moment that made the crowd laugh.
